Import of vehicles to Iceland

Guidelines for transportation of vehicles from USA 

It is necessary to book the vehicle in advance by contacting Icelandair Cargo office at JFK New York. Tel: +1 718 917 0660.    Vehicles without a pre booking can not be accepted by our Ground handling agent.

Prepare for vehicle delivery
The vehicle is delivered to Icelandair Cargo warehouse at JFK airport.   The petrol tank may only contain 1/8 of the tank's capacity.

Following documents need to accompany the vehicle

  • Registration certificate
  • Invoice
  • Shipper Export Declaration (SED)*
  • Dangerous Goods Reports (DGR)

*Icelandair Cargo JFK office can prepare SED.  The shipper is required to sign the SED and the DGR report.

These documents are required for customs export clearance.  It can take up to 5 days for US Customs to give customs clearance for a vehicle after all required documents have been provided.

Procedure of import clearance

Customers need to contact The Road Traffic Directorate (Umferðarstofa), at Borgartuni 30, Reykjavik and apply for a vehicle license number.

*Icelandair Cargo can send the necessary documents to the owner of the vehicle or have it picked up at Keflavik airport.   The price for that service is ISK 1,245.-

The original foreign registration certificate (Original title), along with a copy of the Air Waybill need to be provided to the Road Traffic Directorate.

When the vehicle license number has been processed then next step is contact Icelandair Cargo and ask for customs clearance.    Tel: 5050-785   e-mail:  tollskyrsla@icelandair.is 

Next step in import clearance is to check with Iceland Customs if the vehicle has been approved for clearance.   Iceland Customs 420-1782 

Final step is to collect the vehicle at Icelandair Cargo, Keflavik.
